Peter: Alright, so it's Psalms 39. Uh, let's see here. "I said, 'I will guard my ways, that I may not sin with my tongue; I will restrain my mouth with a muzzle, as long as the wicked are in my presence.' "

Lois: Oooh, so he's trying to be careful to watch what he says?

Peter: Yeah, that's right. And then it goes on, "I was mute and silent; I held my peace even from good, and my sorrow was stirred up. My heart was hot within me; while I was musing, the fire burned."

Brian: Wow, so he was holding back his feelings, even though he was really upset?

Peter: Yup! Then it says, "I spoke with my tongue: 'Lord, make me to know my end and what is the measure of my days, that I may know how frail I am.'"

Chris: Wait, what does that mean?

Lois: It means he's asking God to show him the brevity of life, so he can understand how fleeting it is.

Peter: Exactly! Then it goes, "Behold, You have made my days as an handbreadth, and my age is as nothing before You; verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah."

Brian: Wow, so he's saying that life is really short, even though it feels like a long time?

Lois: Yes, he's trying to remind himself that life is short, so he should make the most of it.

Peter: Alright, so then it says, "Surely every man walks about as a phantom; surely they make an uproar for nothing; he heaps up riches and does not know who will gather them. And now Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You."

Chris: So he's saying that life is so short, all of our efforts are kind of meaningless, and so all he has to rely on is God?

Lois: That's right, Chris. He's saying that all of our worldly pursuits are fleeting, so we should put our hope in God.

Peter: Alright, that's the end of Psalms 39. Let's get some ice cream!
