So, Genesis 28: Jacob gets a vision from God to go to Bethel. He sets off for Bethel, but on the way he stops at a place called Luz, and decides to spend the night there. So he grabs a rock, puts it under his head, and falls asleep. While he's sleeping, he has a dream where he sees a ladder reaching up to Heaven, and God is standing there at the top. God tells Jacob he will be blessed and promises to watch over him no matter where he goes. Jacob wakes up, and he's all like, "Wow, this place is awesome. I'm gonna name it Bethel." So he takes the rock he used as a pillow, pours oil on it, and calls it a memorial. The end.
