Folks, Exodus 39 is an amazing chapter. It tells the story of how the Israelites prepared the garments for the priests to wear. My father used to say, ‘clothes make the man.’ And I’m not joking, these were some fancy duds! Listen, Jack, they made the high priest’s ephod out of fine linen and gold, blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and fine twined linen. C’mon, man! There was also a robe of blue, a turban of pure linen, a linen sash, and a breastpiece. See here, Jack, the breastpiece was made of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and fine twined linen. What was that? Oh, they also made a diadem of pure gold with a plate of gold inscribed with the words “Holy to the Lord.” Excuse me, but that’s a detail I just had to mention! Here’s the deal: the garments were designed to signify holiness, and to protect the priests from the power of God. Literally, it was a way of saying, “No malarkey!” Not gonna happen. I tell you what, these garments were made with great care, and it's a reminder that when God calls us to do something, we must do our best.
