Well, folks, it looks like we've got another winner in the 'Who's the Worst Biblical Character?' sweepstakes. It's Jephthah! This guy lives in Gilead and makes a deal with some of the elders there to help fight against the Ammonites, but only if they make him their leader. So, they do and Jephthah goes off and does battle. As usual for these stories, he wins and then makes a rash vow to sacrifice whatever comes out of his house first if he gets back home safely. He gets back and, of course, the first thing to come out of the house is his daughter. So, he sacrifices her, which is really messed up. The chapter ends with the Israelites remembering Jephthah and his daughter's sacrifice every year. So, you know, it's a real happy story.
