Listen up, recruits! Chapter 14 of 1 Samuel starts out with Saul and his son Jonathan. Jonathan takes a bunch of his armor bearers and goes out to fight against the Philistines. He tells them, "Come on, let's go across to the garrison of these uncircumcised fellows, perhaps the Lord will work for us, for the Lord is not restrained to save by many or by few." So they fight and they defeat the Philistines! The people of Israel were then encouraged and they fought and chased the Philistines all the way to Beth-aven.

Meanwhile, Saul was sitting under a pomegranate tree in Migron when he heard about the battle. He then went to the battle with his men and found the Philistines in the forest of Gibeah. Saul then took a solemn oath that on that day nobody would eat anything until the evening. But Jonathan didn't hear about the oath and he found some honey and ate it. When Saul found out, he was not happy! But the people said that Jonathan should not be punished because he had brought about a great victory for Israel. Saul relented and the battle continued. In the end, Israel was victorious and the Philistines were chased away.
