Listen up, recruits! 1 Samuel starts out with a man named Elkanah who had two wives. He went with his family to Shiloh every year to offer sacrifices to God. The first wife, Peninnah, had several children, but the second wife, Hannah, was barren and could not have kids. Peninnah always ridiculed Hannah at the sacrifices because she was childless. Hannah was so distraught she couldn't eat and she prayed to the Lord for a son. God answered her prayer and she eventually gave birth to a son, whom she named Samuel. She made a vow to the Lord that she would dedicate the boy to God's service, and when Samuel was weaned she took him to the temple at Shiloh and left him there in service to the Lord. The end. Any questions?
