Listen, Jack, here's the deal: in Acts 6 we got these folks called deacons that were appointed by the apostles to serve tables. No malarkey! My father used to say, "If you can't serve the tables, you can't serve the Lord." C'mon, man! So, they chose seven of the best: Stephen, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas. Then, Stephen, he started doing great things, like miracles and stuff, so much so that the folks got jealous and started making false accusations against him. Literally, they brought him before the council and tried to get him in trouble, but he was so eloquent in his defense that they got mad and wanted to stone him. Or uh, you know, they dragged him out of the city and stoned him to death. I tell you what, folks, it was a real tragedy. See here, Jack, Stephen was the first martyr of the church, and his death was a powerful witness to the growing power of the gospel. Not gonna happen again, I tell you what. Excuse me, what was that? The gospel was literally spreading like wildfire.
