Listen up privates! Numbers 4 is all about the division of labor amongst the Levites. God orders Moses to take a census of all the men between 30 and 50 years of age to determine who is fit for service. They are responsible for the care of the holy sanctuary and the holy items in it. So he divides them into four divisions: Gershonites, Kohathites, Merarites, and the sons of Aaron. The Gershonites are responsible for the curtains, coverings, and hangings of the tabernacle and the care of its equipment. The Kohathites are responsible for the holy ark of God, the table, the lampstand, the altars, and all the other furnishings of the holy place. The Merarites are responsible for the frames of the tabernacle, its boards, bars, pillars, and bases. And the sons of Aaron are responsible for the holy things of the sanctuary, the anointing oil, the incense, and everything else. Got it? Good!
