Joe: Alright, I'm here with Bible Expert Steve and we're talking about the 35th chapter of Genesis.

Steve: So, in this chapter, God tells Jacob to go back to Bethel and make an offering of some of the possessions he acquired in his travels. Jacob then commands his household to get rid of their idols and foreign gods and to purify themselves.

Joe: Interesting. So he was asking them to give up all their possessions and to become more spiritual?

Steve: That's right. Jacob and his family then travel to Bethel, and God appears to him again, confirming the covenant he made with Abraham and reiterating his promise to make Jacob's descendants into a great nation.

Joe: Wow, so he was really trying to establish a strong sense of faith in his family, huh?

Steve: Yeah, he was. He then renamed the place Bethel, which means "House of God" and set up a pillar as a reminder of his covenant with God.

Joe: Alright, so what else happens in this chapter?

Steve: Well, Rachel then gives birth to Benjamin, and she dies shortly afterwards. Jacob then names the place where Rachel died, "Rachel's Tomb". Jacob then continues his journey to his father's hometown and is reunited with his family.

Joe: That's a really touching moment.

Steve: Yeah, it is. And then the chapter ends with Jacob telling his family to get rid of their foreign gods and to purify themselves, so that they can be ready to enter the Promised Land.
