Joe: Alright, so Jeremiah 2. What is the gist of this chapter?

Bible Expert: Well the Lord is reminding the people of Israel of how he had chosen them to be his own people and how he had taken care of them in the wilderness when they were coming out of Egypt. He is also pointing out how they had run away from him and were now worshipping idols and false gods.

Joe: Whoa whoa whoa, hold on there. They were worshipping false gods? That's crazy.

Bible Expert: Yes, the Lord was very angry with them for doing this. He says that they have committed a great sin by turning away from him and going after other gods. He accuses them of not even knowing what they are doing and being unable to understand why they are doing it.

Joe: What else did the Lord say?

Bible Expert: He tells them that he had given them a land that was full of bounty and that they had not taken care of it like they should have. He says that they have destroyed it and had made it into a wasteland. He also says that they have forgotten the Lord and had not kept his commands.

Joe: Wow, that's pretty serious. So what did the Lord do in response?

Bible Expert: Well, the Lord sent prophets to warn the people of Israel to turn away from their false gods and to follow him. But the people would not listen, so the Lord said that he would punish them for their disobedience. He said that he would bring calamity upon them and that their enemies would take their land away from them.

Joe: Yikes. Well, that's a pretty somber ending.
