Joe: Alright, so what do you got for us today?
Bible Expert: Well, Joe, I'm here to tell you about Psalms 109.
Joe: Psalms 109? What's that about?
Bible Expert: In this Psalm, David is asking God to take revenge on his enemies. He asks God to send punishment and curses on them, so that they may be repaid for their wickedness.
Joe: Whoa whoa whoa, it sounds like David is pretty angry!
Bible Expert: Yes, he is. He's very angry and frustrated with his enemies and he is asking God to take vengeance on them.
Joe: Wow, that's intense. What kind of curses is he asking for?
Bible Expert: Well, he asks for them to be cursed in their work, cursed with poverty, cursed with shame and dishonor, cursed with broken relationships, cursed with bad luck, and cursed with physical and mental distress.
Joe: Whoa, that's pretty harsh. What does David expect will happen to his enemies if God grants his wish?
Bible Expert: He expects that they will experience all of the curses he has asked for and that God will judge them for their wickedness.
Joe: Wow, so this is a pretty intense Psalm. Is there anything else we should know?
Bible Expert: Yes, there is one more thing. This Psalm has a hopeful message in the end. David asks God to be merciful and to forgive his enemies, even though he has asked for punishment. In other words, he is asking for justice and mercy.
Joe: That's really interesting. So even though David is asking for revenge, he's still asking God to be merciful and to forgive his enemies. That's pretty powerful. Thanks for coming on to share this with us.
