Joe: Alright, so what's the scoop on 1 Samuel 16?

Bible Expert: Well, this chapter has a few main events. For one, God tells the prophet Samuel to go to Bethlehem and anoint one of Jesse's sons as the next king of Israel.

Joe: Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on. So the prophet Samuel is going to pick the next king?

Bible Expert: That's right. God instructs Samuel to anoint one of Jesse's sons.

Joe: So Jesse has a bunch of sons?

Bible Expert: Yes, he has eight.

Joe: Eight?! Wow! Whoa! So how does Samuel pick the one to be king?

Bible Expert: Well, God tells Samuel that he should not look at their physical appearance, but he should look at their hearts and decide who is the most righteous one.

Joe: Okay, so what happens next?

Bible Expert: Well, the prophet Samuel goes to Bethlehem and, one by one, he calls Jesse's sons to him. But none of them seem to be the one God has chosen.

Joe: So what did Samuel do?

Bible Expert: He asked Jesse if he had any other sons. Jesse then tells him about his youngest son, David, who was out tending to his father's sheep.

Joe: So what happened when David showed up?

Bible Expert: Well, when David arrived, the Lord told Samuel that this was the one he had chosen to be the next king of Israel. So Samuel anointed David and he became the new king.
