Joe: Alright, so we're talking about 1 Samuel 20. What's the scoop?

Bible Expert: This chapter starts out with Jonathan, the son of King Saul, making a covenant with his best friend David. Jonathan promised to help David if he was ever in trouble.

Joe: Wow, that's a serious promise. What happened next?

Bible Expert: Well, it turns out that David WAS in trouble because Saul was out to kill him. Jonathan warned David and told him to hide until he could figure out what Saul was going to do.

Joe: That's intense! So what did Jonathan do?

Bible Expert: Jonathan did everything he could to protect David. He even arranged a secret meeting between David and Saul so that David could plead his case.

Joe: That's pretty brave. Was it successful?

Bible Expert: It was successful in the sense that Saul didn't kill David, but he was still out to find him. Jonathan helped David escape and even gave him weapons and some provisions for his journey.

Joe: That's really impressive. What happened after that?

Bible Expert: David was able to escape and eventually he was able to return to the court of Saul. Jonathan and David remained very close friends and Jonathan even provided David with secret information about Saul's plans.
