Joe: Alright, so we’ve got a Bible Expert here to tell us about 1 Samuel 15! Let’s hear it!

Bible Expert: Well, this chapter is all about God's instruction to the prophet Samuel to go to the city of Jebus and anoint a new king of Israel.

Joe: Whoa whoa whoa, wait a minute! What’s anointing?

Bible Expert: Anointing is a ritual in which a person is set apart and empowered for a special mission. In this case, it is to be the king of Israel.

Joe: Ah, ok! So God told Samuel to go anoint this guy, but why?

Bible Expert: Because God wanted to replace the current king, Saul, who had been disobedient to Him. So God asked Samuel to go and anoint a new king, and that king was David, who would later go on to become a great king of Israel.

Joe: Wow! So what did Saul do that was so bad?

Bible Expert: Basically, Saul had been commanded by God to completely destroy the Amalekites, but he disobeyed God and kept some of the animals and other things as spoils of war. So God was displeased and chose to replace Saul with David.

Joe: Alright, got it! So what happened next?

Bible Expert: Well, when Samuel confronted Saul about his disobedience, Saul tried to make excuses and tried to appease Samuel by offering burnt offerings. But Samuel told him that obedience is better than sacrifice, and that it was too late for Saul to make amends. So Saul accepted his fate and bowed down before Samuel, and Samuel went on to anoint David as the new king of Israel.
