Joe: Alright, so what's happening in chapter 4?

Bible Expert: Well, after the death of Saul and Jonathan, a man named Ishbosheth is made the king of Israel, but he is only recognized by two of the tribes. Meanwhile, in Judah, the tribe of David, David is made king and is accepted by all of the tribes.

Joe: Interesting, so two different people were made king of the same people?

Bible Expert: Yes, that's right. And this created a rivalry between David and Ishbosheth.

Joe: And then what?

Bible Expert: Well, Ishbosheth's generals, Abner and Joab, ended up fighting against each other. Abner killed Joab's brother Asahel, and Joab killed Abner in revenge.

Joe: Wow, so Ishbosheth's own generals are fighting each other?

Bible Expert: That's right. And then Ishbosheth was assassinated by two of his own captains, Rechab and Baanah.

Joe: Wow, that's pretty intense. So then what happened?

Bible Expert: Well, David had the two captains killed and buried Asahel, who had been killed by Abner. And then he mourned for Abner and said, "Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel?"

Joe: I guess that's one way to end the rivalry. So then what happened?

Bible Expert: Well, the people of Israel eventually accepted David as their king and he reigned over all of Israel for the rest of his life.

Joe: Fascinating!
