Joe: Alright, so what can you tell us about Judges 10?

Bible Expert: Well, Judges 10 is the tenth chapter of the Book of Judges in the Hebrew Bible. It tells the story of Jephthah, a warrior who was appointed by the people of Israel to lead them against their enemies.

Joe: Wow, ok. So what did Jephthah do?

Bible Expert: Well, Jephthah first seeks the help of the Lord by offering a vow. He vows to sacrifice whatever comes out of his house first when he returns from battle, if the Lord gives him victory.

Joe: Oh boy, that's a big promise! Did he win the battle?

Bible Expert: Yes, he did. He defeated the Ammonites, but when he returned home, his daughter was the first to greet him. He was then obligated to fulfill his vow and he did sacrifices his daughter.

Joe: Wow, that's intense. So what happened after that?

Bible Expert: Well, after this, Jephthah made a covenant with the Lord and the Israelites chose him to be their leader. But before he dies, he leads them in a great victory over the Ammonites. Then the people of Israel fell into idolatry, so the Lord punished them by sending the Philistines and the Ammonites to oppress them for 18 years.

Joe: That's pretty messed up. So what happened after that?

Bible Expert: Well, the Israelites cried out to the Lord for help and he sent them a deliverer named Jair, who led them to victory over the Ammonites. After Jair's death, the Israelites again fell into idolatry and the Lord sent more enemies to oppress them. The Book of Judges ends with the Israelites crying out to the Lord for help again.
