Joe: Alright, so tell me about Ruth chapter 1.

Bible Expert: Well, this chapter introduces us to the main character of the book, Ruth. She was a Moabite woman who had lost her husband and father-in-law. She decides to leave her homeland and travel with her mother-in-law, Naomi, to Bethlehem.

Joe: Wait, Moabites? Isn't that like, a different religion?

Jamie: (chiming in from off screen) Yeah, Joe, Moabites were descendants of Lot, Abraham's nephew.

Joe: Wow, that's wild! And so she decided to go to this new place with Naomi?

Bible Expert: Exactly. Ruth travels with Naomi to Bethlehem and when they arrive, Naomi is met by some of her relatives and they are overjoyed to see her. They ask her why she has returned and she tells them that she has been living in Moab as a widow.

Joe: That's so crazy! So what happened next?

Bible Expert: Ruth then meets Boaz, a relative of Naomi's, and he is very kind to her. He allows her to glean in his fields and provides her with food. This kindness is seen as a sign of God's blessing, and the chapter ends with Naomi thanking God for providing for them in their time of need.

Joe: Wow, so God really works in mysterious ways, huh?

Bible Expert: Absolutely. That's one of the main themes of the book of Ruth, and it's something that we will see throughout the rest of the book.
